Suggest A Song Monday-Gills and Tails

I am beginning a new feature on this here blog; Suggest A Song Monday. I suggest a song that I love and that I think you would love. You listen to it. Tell me what you think in the comments. Then, you also recommend one song to me and I will listen to it and tell you what I think. I think this is a wonderful way for us to spread our musical horizons.

First up is Gills and Tails by Amel Larrieux. This song is one of those universal songs that I honestly cannot imagine anyone disliking. The lyrics (below) deal with being in a world you thought would be one way but it turned out very differently. You feel trapped, imprisoned, and you want out. The music and the way she uses her voice almost as an instrument are intoxicating. I love the breakdown at the end where it sounds like she's gasping for air but in this beautiful way...the song has a distorted mermaid feel but also feels grounded on land. So give it a spin, no matter what genre(s) you prefer. This is one of my favorite all-time songs. I hope you will participate!

Gills And Tails - Amel Larrieux

I looked at my reflection in the water/Thought what an unlikely pair/Closed my eyes, held my breath, plummeted down, down, down/And anchored myself there/(Bridge) Can't tell how long I've been...in the company of gills and tails/I think I feel my skin...growing scales/(Chorus) Can I come up for air? Can I come up? Can I come up? (Repeat 3 times)/I'm gettin' eaten up down here/I'm just not built like that/The big fish have a monopoly/The little fish get buried in the sand/(Bridge) This sea world I'm in...sucks your life out, leaves you comatose/Take back your salt and fins...send me a lifeboat/Chorus/I look up with longing at the surface/Hypnotized by the way the sunlight seems to ride each ripple/And they do a dance/Every ray becomes a beckoning hand/I miss the sweetness of oxygen/I mistook this for the promised land

This is really smooth. To accompany the smoothness, I'd go with Brittany Bosco's Blues for Blue. Its very relaxing, and a bit depressing, just like this one.

Gem, this is a great idea! I do want to expand the types of music I listen to and this will definitely help me. I'm pretty open as long as it sounds good to me.

What can I say about this song? I do already enjoy Amel Larrieux's music. I can see myself listening to this at home on my patio w/a glass on wine in my hand.

As far as me recommending some music, I just bought Jamie Foxx's "Intuition". I honestly was taking a chance b/c I've never felt too inclined to buy his music before (even in liking some previous songs of his). But I took a chance because I do like his current songs and felt I needed a new CD/music. I must say that I'm enjoying it and glad I made the purchase. In particular, "Digital Girl" feat. Kanye. It kinda makes me feel like I'm at a cool club or pary. I guess I would say that it has a digital house sound..maybe. Either way, I'm really feelin' it.

That's my 2 cents. I look forward to reading everyone else's input and your future posts on this topic. Mama needs some new music from different genre's!!

Peace.

it's crazy, i'v enever been an amel larrieux listener. not because i didn't like her, but just because i was never really properly intruduced to her music. this was a GREAT first introduction. love the lyrics and her voice is crazy beautiful.

okay I lied on twitter, I love Amel. We created wedding CD's as "soundtracks" and she was listed twice for 'Make Me Whole' and 'No One Else'. I suggest John Mayer's Stop This Train on the Continuum Album. This song makes me think of my Dad and his ailing health and how much I'd like for things to just stop or slow down so I can spend more time with him.

favorite line "Had a talk with my old man, said help me understand, he said turn 68, you'll re-negotiate...don't stop this train".

Lina: I like the feel of Blues for Blue; I'm going to check out her other stuff!

CO: Imeem didn't have the Jamie Foxx song so I will search for it when I get home.

Bloggal: I've actually never heard that song! The lyrics and the speed of her voice just spin you.

MrsMaryMack: I looooove the lyrics to No One Else so much. I like the sentiment in Stop This Train. Does your dad know about you-know-what?

Good idea and sweet little song. I love her voice.

I recommend something totally different: *Lion in a Coma* by Animal Collective. Perhaps you could find it on Pandora? We don't get Pandora in Canada.

Vesper: I am glad you like the song and her voice! I think the world of her.

I like Lion in a Coma! Anything that makes me see colors while I listen to it, I love.
